Our Staff

The Pearlee Charter School is lead by our Director, Mrs. Rebecca Peterson.

Mrs. Peterson has a wide range of abilities.  Her degrees in Secondary Education, Special Education, and School Administration give her the background to run our school with absolute precision.  She has spent the last 16 years in both the homeschool setting as well as the private school sector.  She understands the needs of children on both an educational and emotional level.

Our Asst. Director/Math Teacher is Mr. Fredrick Scheel

Mr. Scheel has been teaching students in junior and high school for over 10 years.  Prior to spending his days in the classroom, he was a practicing Electrical Engineer and owned his own automated control business.  He resides with his lovely French-Canadian wife and two cats.

Administrative Assistant is Julie Crooks

Mrs. Crooks has an extensive background in both the corporate and private sector.  She was a health inspector in Kansas before becoming involved in homeschooling.  Mrs. Crooks has been heavily involved in the Gifted and Talented Communities both in Kansas and Illinois.  Her wealth of knowledge in this area is very helpful in the school atmosphere.

Please feel free to contact me at pearleecharterschool@yahoo.com to talk about positions. We want the community involved in whatever ways possible. Whether it is teaching, substituting, fund raising, etc. This is the community’s school. It is for our children and their future.

What other staff are being selected for Pearlee Charter School? How was the name selected? When will the charter school begin? Email me about any other positions which come available that I am qualified to apply for. Who will be the students who attend and what is your criteria for enrollment? How many students do you expect to enroll for your initial opening? What type of curriculum and subjects will be covered at Pearlee Charter School?

We are seeking all types of personnel. Please email me privately at pearleecharterschool@yahoo.com for job information.

We are wanting to open our doors to educating Decatur this fall. The minute DPS gives us our approval, we will be in the school daily to accept registrations for this upcoming school year (2010-11).

All students desiring an alternative education are welcome at Pearlee. There will be a lottery system for the selection of students IF we hit our maximum number of 350 this year. The lottery is strictly a name in a hat drawing. Everyone has the same chances. Once the school is operational, all current students have priority over new students. The lottery will then take place only on the spots available.

We are hoping for 100 students this year, but would love to bursting at the seams!

We will have a college preparatory program. Our purpose is to make sure these students are prepared to continue on with their education. We have chosen Pearson as they have a wide variety of educational options (www.pearsonschool.com). We are also putting in a virtual school (Florida Virtual) for students wanting to take classes which we are not offering in the traditional room. Say, if a child would like to take Chinese, they may do so in the virtual class lab. We will also be able to use the lab to help students pick up a class which they might have missed earlier in their education.

We are offering the core classes as well as advanced. It will depend on what students we receive, but as it is right now, we are planning Pre-Algebra Algebra 1, 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus for Math. Social Studies/History will include American History, World History, Economics, Geography, and Social Studies. Science will have General Science, Biology 1 and 2, Chemistry, and Physics. For English there is Freshman Composition, Sophomore Composition, American Literature, and British Literature. Spanish 1 and 2 will be offered our first year with adding levels in the future as well as additional languages (French). Music is being offered as Music Appreciation and Choir. Art is an outstanding program being taught by one of the leading artist in the area. Of course PE and Health will be in the curriculum. Additional standard electives, i.e. home economics, will also be an option.

We want to be what the student needs. We will continue to grow our educational program to meet their needs and desires.

I have researched the pearson school curriculum and found it to be quite interesting. I see that the subjects are varied, and could be very similiar to Milligan Academy Safe School. I know that there are so many at-risk students here in Decatur, but how will you minimize the number per class? Will any of the students come from Phoenix Alternative here in Decatur? Looking forward to the success of Pearlee Charter School.

This is going to be our hardest job. Where do we say, “We can’t take anymore” ? Basically, we are allowing so many spots in the school (350). When registration comes in and those numbers are filled, all the names will go into a hat and be drawn. It will be a lottery system. Not first come, first served. The lottery will only happen if we hit a maximum number of students. Now, once we are up and operational, all students who attended the previous year are automatically in the school. They will not be put into the lottery system. The lottery will only be used to fill the leftover spots.

Pearlee is open to anyone wishing to seek an education. If there are students desiring to change from Phoenix, they are welcome to seek that.

We want everyone to feel at home at Pearlee.

Pearlee Charter School seems to be more advanced than other Alternative Schools which I have worked with in Decatur. A virtual classroom gives the students more options and challenges – possibly, than the public high schools. I am more and more curious about how the first year will conclude with these courses available. Wow!
